Before the full-scale war, the animals at the "Askania-Nova" Biosphere Reserve of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine lived a happy life, with plenty of feed, open space, and people to care for them. This place was not a zoo; every visitor was merely a guest in the natural world. Everything changed when Russian aggressors invaded our country. Thousands of the reserve's animals faced the threat of starvation. Only thanks to dedicated staff and concerned individuals did the animals survive.
Unable to use funds for routine expenditures allocated on the institution's registration accounts at the State Treasury Service of Ukraine (currently, allocations and payments are made exclusively for salaries with related taxes and public utilities), all urgent issues regarding the maintenance of collections, protection, and preservation of natural and artificial ecosystems of the "Askania-Nova" Biosphere Reserve are being resolved through charitable contributions. Due to the occupation and the disruption of transport logistics from the government-controlled territory, transferring funds remains the only viable assistance mechanism.
Despite the danger, the staff of the "Askania-Nova" Biosphere Reserve of the NAAS continue to care for the animals under their charge and refuse to abandon them.
"Askania-Nova" is already preparing for winter, believes in the victory of Ukraine, and expresses gratitude for the assistance.
